Some Pond skimming in Warren, Vermont at Sugarbush

(Source) WARREN, Vt. – Hundreds of people were out at Sugarbush Resort Saturday for the annual pond skim, a tradition that many skiers say is a spring rite of passage.

Mike Hart is from New Jersey and says he skis at Sugarbush every year. This Saturday was his third time participating in the annual pond skim competition.

“I did not make it across my first year. Got real wet, and it was really cold, like even colder than this, and the water’s really cold. My legs locked up, and I couldn’t move. I was walking around like this,” said Hart.

Skiers and riders lined up dressed in costume for a chance to speed down the slopes and attempt to skim across open water. Hart was happy to make it across this year in his colorful attire.

“It’s kind of a Candy Land character. We play that game at home a lot, so I’ve got my fruit loop shirt on, my necklace of joy, and my blue hair. It’s all from Candy Land,” said Hart.

Organizers say the event is usually limited to just 100 participants, but this year they decided to open it up to welcome even more. Around 140 competitors ended up giving the course a go dressed up, or down.

“We saw a lot of animals, cows, a moose. Let’s see, Pac-Man. A lot of super heroes, Superman, Spider-man, all that jazz, and then the real brave ones who just wear the bikini,” said John Bleh, Sugarbush Communications Supervisor.

Villanova University Wildcats fan Robert Goyeneche sported his favorite basketball team’s logo in honor of their big game on Saturday night. This was his second year at the pond skim. Read More
