What does Vermont offer?

Vermont is a state in the northeastern United States known for its natural beauty, picturesque small towns, and outdoor recreation opportunities. From hiking in the Green Mountains to exploring charming downtowns, there are plenty of fun things to do in Vermont. In this essay, we will discuss some of the best activities and attractions that this state has to offer.

One of the most popular things to do in Vermont is to explore the state’s natural beauty. The Green Mountains, which run north-south through the state, offer a wide range of outdoor activities. Hiking is a popular activity, with trails for all skill levels. Some of the most popular hikes include the Long Trail, which runs the length of the state, and Camel’s Hump, which offers stunning views of the surrounding area. In the winter, skiing and snowboarding are popular activities at Vermont’s many ski resorts, such as Killington and Stowe.

Another popular activity in Vermont is to explore the state’s charming small towns. Burlington, the largest city in the state, is a popular destination for its vibrant downtown area, which is filled with restaurants, bars, and shops. Other popular small towns include Woodstock, which is known for its historic architecture and picturesque setting, and Manchester, which offers great shopping and dining opportunities.

If you’re interested in history, Vermont has a rich past that is worth exploring. The state played a key role in the American Revolution and the Civil War, and there are many historic sites and museums that commemorate these events. The Bennington Battle Monument, which commemorates the Battle of Bennington, is a must-see for history buffs. Other popular historic sites include the Calvin Coolidge Homestead and the Ethan Allen Homestead.

Vermont is also known for its artisanal food and drink. The state is home to many craft breweries, distilleries, and wineries, which offer tastings and tours. Some of the most popular breweries include Hill Farmstead Brewery, which is consistently ranked as one of the best breweries in the world, and The Alchemist, which is known for its award-winning IPAs. Vermont is also known for its artisanal cheese, maple syrup, and other farm-to-table products.

The most ambitious upgrade to snowmaking in the history of the ski business in Vermont is in place at all 15 major resorts in the state, giving owners and managers a new measure of confidence that the 2014-15 season will be the third in a row with near record numbers of skier visits.

Vermont saw about 4.5 million skier visits in each of the past two years, putting the state third in the nation in terms of the size of its ski industry, behind only Colorado and California, said Parker Riehle, president of the Vermont Ski Areas Association.

“We’re off to a really fast, strong start again this year,” Riehle said. “We couldn’t be happier about having another record opening. Coming into Thanksgiving weekend, nine alpine areas were open and at least three Nordic areas were open.”

The total investment in new, energy-efficient snow guns among the 15 resorts was $15 million, with $5 million of that expenditure being picked up by Efficiency Vermont, which negotiated with major snow gun manufacturers to offer bulk pricing to Vermont’s resorts.

“We were able to work with the manufacturers from the beginning to cue them into the fact that very large orders would be coming in from Vermont,” said Kelly Lucci, spokesperson for Efficiency Vermont. “Our goal was to get as many of those old energy hog snow guns off the mountain as possible. We think we got over 90 percent, the vast majority.”

Parker Riehle confirmed that 1,800 old, less efficient snow guns were replaced by 2,300 new high efficiency guns across Vermont’s resorts. Riehle said 80 percent of the skiable terrain in the state — more than 4,500 acres — is now covered by snowmaking

In September, she was arrested and charged with her fourth DUI. Because she was unwilling to post the $2,500 bail, the 47-year-old South Newfane resident was ushered to one of Vermont’s scarce inmate beds.

But rather than live in prison, at the cost of $180 taxpayers’ dollars a day, LaClair spends time with family, visits a therapist and is trying to rebuild a life that she says is strained by addiction. After only a week behind bars, and with her felony case pending, LaClair went home. But she is not exactly free.

Around LaClair’s ankle is a GPS-equipped monitor that transmits her exact location to law enforcement. She is the first participant in a technology-based pilot program for pretrial detainees that could potentially alleviate Vermont’s overcrowded and increasingly expensive prison system.

LaClair is under orders to stay inside Windham County’s borders — and inside her home from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Should she stray from her court-approved locations, or get close to a forbidden one, the monitor vibrates and transmits a warning to law-enforcement officials, who can reach her anywhere in the county within 30 minutes.

Most televised political debate in the United States is a lifeless, platitude-laden sideshow with virtually no value except as a grim form of entertainment, like watching democracy itself fed to the lions at the Coliseum. That is why Vermont’s recent gubernatorial debate, in which every candidate on the ballot was invited to participate, was such a breath of fresh air.

Vermont’s Democratic incumbent governor Peter Shumlin has a virtual lock on the election, with a double-digit lead over Republican challenger Scott Milne. Fortunately, the five other candidates on the ballot made for a lively discussion October 9. Read More
