Trooper Rich Slusser says the 33-year-old man from West Hartford, Connecticut, was also weaving in and out of traffic in Royalton on Interstate 89 before he was pulled over Wednesday afternoon. The speed limit on the interstate is 65 mph.

The driver has been charged with excessive speeding and negligent operation.

Slusser says the man was given a citation ordering him to appear in Vermont Superior Court in White River Junction on Oct. 27.

Two months ago, voters in bright-blue Vermont came within an eyelash of ousting their Democratic governor in favor of a rookie Republican businessman — and the race still isn’t over.

The contest between two-term incumbent Gov. Peter Shumlin and Republican Scott Milne was so close it triggered an unusual provision of the Vermont Constitution that gives the state’s 180 lawmakers the final say. A secret-ballot vote to decide who will govern the Green Mountain State for the next two years is scheduled for Thursday.

Most observers expect the state’s deeply Democratic legislature to grant Shumlin a third term. The vote in Montpelier this week is a result of a colonial-era provision of the Vermont Constitution that requires successful statewide candidates to win more than 50 percent of the vote. Although nothing binds lawmakers to choose the top vote-getter — this is the 25th time in history the vote has been kicked to the legislature — that’s been the practice in every modern gubernatorial election.

That the race was close at all was just another blot on a miserable 2014 for Shumlin, who helmed Democratic efforts to win governorships before he nearly lost his own. As chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, Shumlin traveled the country as his party’s top cheerleader for gubernatorial prospects — only to watch the best ones wilt and Republicans capture blue states like Maryland, Massachusetts and Illinois.

It’s part of a study being done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Vermont Health Department that is seeking to determine if the whooping cough vaccine isn’t as effective against a new strain of the disease.

The researchers are examining the records of 854 people, ages 4 to 19, who contracted whooping cough from late 2011 to early 2013.

They are also examining a control group of about 2,500 people from the same age group and parts of Vermont who did not get sick.

They calls are meant to ensure the study looks at the complete vaccination histories of the people being studied.

A judge agreed to set bail at $100,000 on Monday for a Milton, Vermont man facing multiple felony charges, including attempted first-degree murder of his female companion after she tumbled more than 60 feet on a mountain ledge last month.

Lucas J. Gingras, 28, had been held in prison without bail since his arraignment June 25 in Vermont Superior Court in Burlington. Judge Brian Grearson told Gingras he could have his bail reviewed later. Read More
